In 2019 the Submergence Collective traveled to Nepal to work with Pratiman-Neema College (PNC) to create artwork that engages with the ecology of the Danda River, as well as with the students in the already-established Eco-Club. The works that were completed during their residency were: 1) the development and installation of DEMP (Danda Ecosystem Monitoring Program) which included fabricating and installing three different monitoring sites/sculptures around campus, creating interactive citizen-science toolkits which held materials for data collection and field exploration, and developing and instructing corresponding educational programming and supporting materials and 2) designing and installing a floating wetland sculpture with intention to filter contaminated water from the drainage before it flows into the Danda River as well as to act as a pilot project to demonstrate the potential viability of wetland systems acting as bioremediative systems.
It is with our most sincere gratitude to work alongside the students and staff of PNC and the Nepal Study Center. We are thankful for our dear friends, Chelsea Call, Griffin Ferrante, and Matthew Shaw, who volunteered to travel to Nepal and help with various stages of this project.
